Je me suis inscrite au Sewalong Pantalon de Sunni The Cupcake Goddess parce que je ne possède qu'un seul pantalon, noir, du prêt-à-porter. Ma dernière tentative date d'il y a deux ans environ, un patron Burda Petite. Malheureusement, la couleur vert olive n'a pas suffit pour me faire oublier les deux grands problèmes : 1) la ceinture descend au milieu dos (traduction : mes fesses ne sont pas allemandes!) et j'ai des grands plis derrière les cuisses (encore mes fesses!?!?!?).

Donc, je m'y mets sérieusement en 2011 avec ce patron-ci:


C'est le modèle 129 du Burda de Novembre dernier. Jambes larges, pas de ceinture, poches passepoilées...que je ne sais pas encore faire!


Je n'ai pas encore de tissu mais je vais faire un tour chez Oscar la semaine prochaine pour voir de plus près ces Casimir qu'il essaie de fourguer à ma mère.

Et si ça se passe bien, je continue avec un pantalon étroit (j'ai des envies de tunique), le 118 du Burda d'Avril 2007:


(Maintenant que j'y pense, la veste n'est pas mal non plus!)


Le calendrier est déjà établi:

•3 au Janvier : coupe et assemblage de la toile
•9 au 15 Janvier : ajustage de la toile et modifications du patron
•16 au 22 Janvier : traitement des tissu et doublure, coupe
•23 au 31 Janvier : couture!

I signed up for the Trouser Sewalong that Sunni the Cupcake Goddes is hosting because I only own one pair of trousers, some ancient black RTW. My last go at this was about two years ago, a Burda Petite pattern. Sadly, not even the gorgeous olive green fabric could hide two major problems: CB waist dipped low (read : non-German behind!) and wrinkles at the back thigh.

So, I'm tackling the problem in 2011 with this pattern:



It's modell 129 from the November issue. Wide legs, no waistband belt and welt pockets...that I've never made yet!


I don't have any fabric yet but I'm going to check out these Casimir (keysemere aka tropical wool) that Oscar keeps pushing on my mother all the time.

And, if all goes well, I'll move on to narrow trousers (to wear with tunic tops I'm craving lately), like 04-2007-118:

Bon, je fais des projets pour 2011, surtout que l'année risque de mal commencer avec nos éternels problèmes politiques.

Le suffrage universel

Il y a eu des élections générales dans le pays dimanche et, comme d'hab, ça a mal fini. Ceci m'a valu un jour de congé inattendu hier. Qu'est-ce qu'on fait après des heures de débats audio-télé-électroniques qui vous saoûlent?

On termine une robe trop longtemps en suspens.


J'avais commencé la robe chemisier Burda 04-2010-116 en juin dernier et elle a langui sur un cintre depuis lors. Je n'aimais pas la manche que j'avais montée et je voulais la refaire plus nette.

J'avais, surtout, failli tout bousiller en voulant poser des boutons-pressions à la place de boutonnières et boutons le long de la patte de boutonnage avant. J'en avais justement reçu dans la fameuse boîte:


Mais j'ai beau essayé, je n'arrivais pas à faire tenir les boutons-pressions. Regardez un peu le désastre à peine évité:


Plein de petits trous!

Heureusement que j'ai pu camoufler tout ça sous les boutons et les boutonnières traditionnelles auxquelles j'ai du me résoudre en dernier lieu:


Je suis très contente du résultat final qui a obtenu un vote unanime au suffrage universel (autrement dit, mes collègues ont adoré au bureau):


La robe est un peu courte pour le bureau parce que je n'avais pas lu mes notes pour voir que je n'avais prévu que 3 cm d'ourlet!!!

Comme j'avais juste assez de tissu pour réaliser la robe, je me suis contentée d'un empiècement dos horizontal mais je voulais tellement des chevrons:


J'ai fabriqué ma ceinture moi-même à partir d'une ceinture fournie avec un pantalon du prêt-à-porter et un long morceau de ruban blanc:

There were elections here this past Sunday and, predictably, it's not going well. This meant I stayed home unexpectedly yesterday. So what do you do after mind numbing hours of debat online, on tv and on the radio?

You finish up a UFO dress, of course!


I had started Burda 04-2010-116 back in June and since then it had been gathering dust on a hanger. I didn't like how one of the sleeves was set and I wanted to unstitch it and do it over better.

But, above all, I had almost ruined it while trying to set in some snap bouttons down the front placket. As it happens, I had received some in Ze box:


But, try as I might, I just couldn't get them to hold. Look at this narrow escape from disaster:

Thankfully, I was able to hide all this mess beneath the buttons and buttonholes I put in in the end:


I'm very happy with the finished results which garnered direct universal suffrage (ie my coworkders loved it) Je suis très contente du résultat final qui a obtenu un vote unanime au suffrage:


The dress is a bit short for work but it's my fault. I forgot to reread my notes in order to notice I had only figured 3cm (1in1/4) of hem allowance!!!

Since I had just enough fabric to do the dress, I had to settle for a horizontal back yoke instead of the chevrons I really wanted:


I made my belt myself from one that came with RTW pants I had and a long piece of poly ribbon:

Je suis en train, un peu malgré moi, d'affirmer ma présence en ligne. J'ai traduit les cartes de Gwen en français et la page est maintenant en ligne.

Oui, je suis très fière :)

Bon, ce n'est pas encore le personal branding (que je découvrais avant-hier seulement), loin de là, mais ça fait tout chose de voir son nom sur la toile.

En échange, je dois recevoir sous peu un jeu à moi. J'ai choisi les cartes en verges parce que je me trompe à chaque fois que j'essaie d'acheter dans le système impérial. Au moins avec ces cartes, ça devrait mieux aller à l'avenir.

It's not yet personal branding (which I discover only two days ago) but what a fuzzy feeling to see your name on the web.

In exchange for my services, I'm getting a set of cards. I asked for yards because I can't keep getting my fabric wrong when I use the Imperial system. At least with these cards, I should do better next time.

Restashification : Octobre 2010

J'ai fait allusion dans mon billet d'hier à un voyage aux Etats-Unis en octobre dernier. Durant ce séjour, j'en ai naturellement profité pour reflouer mon stash de tissus.

Oui, malgré (ou à cause de, peut-être!) Ze box, comme une vraie malade, il me fallait encore plus de tissus.

Les acquisitions se sont faites en trois temps.

D'abord, à NYC avec l'aventure chez AKN Fabrics avec ma tante. Imaginez un peu, elle avait oublié l'adresse et nous sommes parties, sur Broadway, espérant trouver de mémoire le magasin!!!

Donc, ça a commencé par mon tissu africain. Ma tante m'a aussi offert des patrons de ma liste d'envies:


Ensuite, Philadelphie où je visitais une copine de longue date. Nous avons fait une excursion chez JOMAR que j'ai découvert sur le blogue Cidell. Malheureusement, j'ai égaré le reçu sinon je vous aurais dit précisément lequel mais c'est un magasin sur un seul plan comme un hangar. J'espère que celles qui connaissent indiqueront la bonne adresse.

J'ai craqué sur des voiles de coton imprimés dans les tons marron, le délire total!


J'ai acheté au pifomètre (oui, hautement scientifique), parfois achetant tout ce qui restait sur le rouleau. J'adore quand ça m'arrive! Et le tout pour $30 TTC. J'ai vraiment du me retenir.

Et dimanche, elle m'emmène chez Gaffney Fabrics et m'OFFRE des tissus. J'ai pris plusieurs tricots:


La fin de semaine suivante, j'étais avec Cidell à Baltimore. Si vous êtes son amie sur FB, vous avez eu la primeure : un dimanche de rêve sur un bateau (au port mais quand même) avec BeeBee, Marji, Robin et Susan Khalje. Ici, on appelle ça un plon gaye*, mdr!

Cidell m'a amenée chez Joann's à ma descente du bus et j'ai pris quelques fournitures mais surtout des patrons durant la vente à 99c:


et des tissus dans la section "red tag" à moitié prix:

Mais la meilleure, vous savez ce que c'est? Tous ces tissus ont coûtés tout au plus $3.00 la verge!!!! Ça me changeait de polyester à $10 US que je trouve ici.

In yesterday's post, I mention a trip this past October to the US. Obviously, I took the time to increase my stash.

Yes, despite (or, even, because of) Ze box, like the sick puppy that I must be, I needed more fabric.

The purchases were made in three stops.

First, in NYC, I went hunting for AKN Fabrics with my aunt. Picture it, she had forgotten the address and we went off on Broadway hoping to find it by ourselves from her vague memory of the street number!!!

So it all started with my African fabric. My aunt also gave me some patterns from my wishlist:


Then, I went Philadelphia to visit a long time friend. We took a trip to JOMAR which I had heard of through Cidell's blog. Unfortunately, I misplaced the receipt so I cannot tell you which store it was but it's a one floor hangar-type structure. I hope those who recognise it will post the correct address in the comments.

I went crazy for these brown toned cotton lawn prints!!!


I guestimated the yardage (yes, highly scientific, I know!), sometimes buying whatever was left on the roll. I LOVE when this happens! And all that for less than $30 after taxes.

And then on Sunday, she took me to Gaffney Fabrics and GIFTED me some more fabric. I picked several knits:


The following week-end, I was with Cidell in Baltimore. If you've friended her on FB, you heard it first : a Sunday on a boat (moored but whatever!) with BeeBee, Marji, Robin and Susan Khalje. This is what we call here a "plon gaye", LOL!

Cidell took me to Joann's after picking me up from the bus. I bought a few notions, mostly patterns in the 99c sale:


but also fabrics in the red tag section:


The best part of all this? All these fabrics cost me $3/yard or less!!!What a difference from all the $10 US polyester I keep finding around here.

J'ai pas d'excuses

Hélas, non, je n'ai pas d'excuses pour expliquer mon absence sur la toile. Le mojo comme le moral est en zigzag. Je couds mais je suis poursuivie par une guigne de toiles les unes plus nulles que les autres.

Sauf que...ma chance semble avoir tourné. J'ai plus d'excuses mais j'ai une jupe que voici:



Je l'ai réalisée avec le tissu africain offert par Ma-Tante-Qui-Coud lors de notre séjour à NYC. Le modèle de base est très simple:



Deux grandes leçons:
1) tissu extra + patron raz* = effet boeuf;
2) la paresse se paie cher: ne faites pas comme moi, j'ai refusé de faufiler les arêtes de plis et après il a fallu me taper une corvée terrible au repassage. Et en plus, cette cotonnade ne tient pas les plis bien ni toute seule donc je l'ai portée deux fois mais j'hésite à la laver.

J'ai baptisé la jupe un vendredi au bureau par cette tenue qui a reçu plein de compliments :

Avant de vous laisser, il faut que je vous montre mes chaussures, source de bonheur intense:



Ce sont des Verstood de Naturalizer, acheter une pitance lors d'une vente chez Macy's durant le même voyage. J'ai aussi les noires et je convoites intensément les grises.

Sadly, no, I have no excuses for my long online absence. The mojo, as themorale, has had its ups and downs. I sew but I'm plagued with the worst bad luck of ever more horrible muslins.

Except...my luck seems to be changing. I don't have excuses but I do have this skirt:



I made it with the african fabric my Sewing Aunt gave me during our trip to NYC. The base pattern is really simple:




Two things I learned :
1) wow fabric + raz* pattern = killer effect;
2) laziness is will cost you : don't do as I did and omit basting the pleat edges. Afterwards, you have a hell of a time ironing them all. Especially when dealing with cotton that doesn't hold pleats unless you iron it to death. So far, I've worn the skirt twice, pushing back the time to wash (and iron!) it again.

I wore my skirt on Casual Friday at work with this well received styling :

Mais alors, pourquoi une boîte? Et bien, Barbara m'avait promis une surprise. Regardez un peu ce qu'il y avait d'inclus:

Et s'il fallait encore vous convaincre de la grande générosité de Barbara, elle a numérisé et mis tous ses magazines de couture en ligne

Friday, I got my mail. Just one box, from Zagreb.

Thank you sooo much Barbara who kindly agreed to trace this wonderful knit dress pattern Burda 08-2000-127 that she made in a stripe print:



But, why a whole box? Well, Barbara had warned me there would be a surprise included. Take a look :




Two magazines : La Mia Boutique Ottobre 2008, Modellina No 114 Autunno Inverno 2001-2002, three black invisible mesh tape zippers and four cuts of fabric.

And if you still need convincing as to her great generosity, she scanned and posted all her sewing magazines online

I'm walking on air!

Du plomb dans l'aile...

Je n'ai rien cousu depuis trois semaines.

D'abord parce que j'ai eu des problèmes d'électricité. Il semble, d'après ce que me disent les voisins, que la compagnie nationale a refait surface et procedait à une vaste campagne de rebranchement/débranchement. Et mon fil fut la victime innocente d'un employé trop zélé!!!

Vous connaissez le problème: il me reste une tête de manche à corriger, des boutonnières et l'ourlet et puis PAF! plus de courant pendant 2 jours. Adieu Mojo, manche et ourlet. Un UFO est né.

Ensuite, la chaleur torride de l'été tropicale. Mon coin couture est CHAUD! Et j'ai souvent du mal à supporter la température de la pièce.

Mais le coup de grâce, c'est le moral. J'ai eu des problèmes au bureau et ça a mis à genoux ma motivation. Trop déprimée pour coudre, l'horreur totale!

La bonne nouvelle, c'est que ça va mieux dans tous ces domaines. Ce n'est pas le bonheur total mais j'ai envie de coudre comme une folle.

I haven't sewn a thing in three weeks.

First, I had electrical problems. According to the neighbors, the national electrical company was cleaning up the wiring, unplugging illegals and replugging downed lines. Well, my poor innocent line was a victim, collateral damage really!!!

You know how it is: a sleevehead to correct, buttonholes and a hem to go and then BAM! no electricity. Goodbye Mojo, sleevehead and hem. Hello UFO.

Then the intense summer heat. My sewing nook is in a really hot part of the house and I just can't sew comfortably.

But the really trouble came from all my work troubles. I was just too depressed of the situation to sew. The horror!

But the good news is that things are better on all fronts and I'm really itching to sew something.

La vita è bella

Je passais une journée plutôt mauvaise au bureau quand mon courrier est arrivé:

Oui, le numéro de Mars 2010 de La Mia Boutique. Le bonheur total!

Au début, j'étais un peu perplexe: je n'avais pas commandé de copie, j'en cherche un partout (enfin, partout ou on accepterait ma carte de crédit). Et puis j'ai découvert le petit mot glissé dans la première page.

Alors, merci beaucoup à lyl pour ce joli cadeau qui a sauvé une journée merdique! Si j avais ton courriel, je t aurais fait un merci plus discret mais bon...

At first, I was a bit confused : I hadn't ordered any copy of LMB, I' ve been looking for one everywhere (at least, everywhere that would take my credit card and not just Paypal). And then I found the little note slip under the cover.

So thank you very much lyl for a lovely gift that made my up-to-then-crappy day! If I had your email, I would write a less public thank you note but still...

My must-make is in the section the online translator describes as:
